Timing matters enormously when booking flights. Book too early and you pay a premium before airlines have released their cheapest seats. Book too late and prices spike as departure approaches. The sweet spot depends on where you're flying.
The optimal booking window by route type
European short-haul (UK to Europe)
The ideal window for European routes is 6–8 weeks before departure. Budget airlines like easyJet and Ryanair typically release their best prices at this point. Booking more than 3 months ahead often means you're paying full price — the deep discounts come later. Booking less than 2 weeks out means you're paying a last-minute premium.
Long-haul (UK to USA, Asia, Australia)
For long-haul routes, the sweet spot is 3–5 months before departure. Airlines release long-haul inventory further out, and the best prices often appear in the 3–5 month window. The absolute cheapest long-haul fares usually appear midweek (Tuesday–Thursday).
School holiday periods
If you must fly during half-term, Easter, summer, or Christmas, the rules change. Prices for peak school holiday dates are often lowest 4–6 months ahead and rise steeply as dates approach. Set a TripHunt price alert as early as possible and book when you see a dip.
Day of the week matters
Analysis of fare data consistently shows that flights departing on Tuesday and Wednesday are cheapest. Friday and Sunday are most expensive. If your trip is flexible by even one or two days, the savings can be significant — often 20–30% on the same route.
The January effect
January is consistently the cheapest month for European short-haul from UK airports. Post-Christmas, demand drops sharply and airlines discount aggressively to fill seats. If you can be flexible about destination, January is the best time to grab a bargain.
Setting alerts instead of guessing
Rather than trying to time the market perfectly, the most reliable strategy is to set a price alert for your route at your target price and let TripHunt do the monitoring. When the price hits your target — or drops into error-fare territory — you get an instant notification.
